Fun Ways to Get Fit Outside
There are two ways to lose weight – consume fewer calories and burn more calories – and doing both together is a win-win situation. With better weather finally upon us, what better way to burn some calories than to get outside and get active?
After being cooped up inside for a very long winter, stepping outside is a great way to help keep weight gain at bay and even lose a few pounds by getting moving – and there are lots of fun ways to achieve this.
Here are some top popular activities to try this spring and summer – maybe some are favorites from your past, or maybe it is time to challenge yourself to something new:
Gardening
Stop seeing yard work as a chore and embrace your green fingers. A rigorous time in your garden is a proven workout and works muscles you had forgotten you had. It is not just about tidying up after the winter – getting into gardening gives you something to show for your efforts, as well. You can sit back at a family barbecue and admire the beautiful setting you have created for yourself – and even better if you tried your hand at growing your own vegetables, as you can eat them at the same time.
Hiking
It is the simplest and cheapest form of exercise possible. Just open your front door and get walking. Hikes do not have to be all-day, backpack-wearing treks through mountainous terrain – start with exploring a local park. With city, county, state, and national parks to choose from, there will be a walk for everyone of any ability level, from a short flat stroll to that hardier hike. Walking in the natural world has been shown to help reduce stress and anxiety as we reconnect with the natural world around us.
Rock Climbing
Many state parks feature cliffs that are open for climbing and there are many clubs to help you try your hand at this increasingly popular activity. Start off with something small and you will soon be stretching in ways you did not know you could as you seek to master the challenge and literally scale new heights.
Swimming
Whether in a pool, a lake, or the sea, swimming is a great way to burn some calories and build your muscle strength, as well as being a calming time for self-reflection and meditation. If you do take the plunge in outdoor swimming, it is a great way to top up your Vitamin D levels in the sun.
Cycling
If walking or hiking is a little slow for your taste, jump on your bike. The two wheels approach allows you to cover much greater distances at speed – and whether you prefer long race-style rides or a more leisurely exploration through the park, there are cycle trails everywhere, with more being built all the time.
Canoeing
Whether you prefer a single-person kayak or the larger multi-person canoe, getting on the water can be exhilarating and relaxing depending on whether you like rapids or tranquil. Either way, you will be paddling and that is a surprising burner of calories.
Dog Walking
Don’t leave your faithful furbaby at home – dogs love walking and exploring, and they can be the ideal companion to help motivate you to get out and about. Your dog rarely complains about the weather or the time of day – if they are with you and outside, it is their perfect day.
